Instead of bombing the asteroid itself one can detonate the bomb near the asteroid and the force of the bomb would change the asteroids trajectory. Another thing with bombing is that one can detonate the bomb on top of the asteroid with perfect timing just before it hits Earth and thus leaving the Earth not with one giant asteroid but instead with smaller ones. Overall, enjoyed a video a lot.

This was great! Your expert knew his stuff. You asked him questions normal people would like to know. Your illustrations were great. Your shots didn't last forever. The subtexts for each segment were short (5 or 6 words). Your explanations were neither too complicated nor too simplified. I'm a retired surgeon (71 y/o), used to reading scientific medical journal articles, and acquainted with statistics, calculus, physics, chemistry, and biology, etc. Over-simplification, for me, makes topics less understandable, not more. I would like you to make an episode that addresses the following problem, one that has puzzled me for years: Why do stars exist and continually appear to come into being? We observe star formation in clouds of supernova dust and debris. Heavy elements in various conglomerations are present in these interstellar clouds. The clouds look somewhat dense, but the particles seen within them are really quite rarified and look dense only because they are immense in size and block the light of stars behind them. The hydrogen gas that stars are made up of starts out as scattered ions, atoms, and molecules that mixed in with immense clouds of heavier debris. Hydrogen is the lightest element. It's elemental compound H2 is lighter than Helium. As single particules hydrogen seems an unlikely source of immense mass and gravity. Conglomerations of heavier atoms, Iron, for example would be more likely to attract H2 than the other way around. The hydrogen atoms or molecules would therefore tend to remain within such clouds and not be attracted to each other. Before this hydrogen coelesces into a star, each hydrogen particle could be miles apart moving loosely around heavier particles. It would seem that the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics would predict that hydrogen atoms, ions, and gas would tend to remain mixed in with the particles of these supernova dust clouds rather than coelescing into massive, dense objects, whose gravity exceeds that of the material that we see orbiting stars like our own star in our solar system. Star formation from clouds of supernova gas, to me, seems as likely as observing a well mixed solution of iodine in a glass of water spontaneously coelescing into a super-dense solid particle of iodine in the center of the glass of water. My son is a professor of mechanical engineering who worked at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and is currently a professor of mechanical engineering at UCLA. He worked on how to create fusion reactions within the confines of a fusion reactor. Getting a few atoms of hydrogen to fuse into Helium is something that we really cannot do reliably. It takes tremendous external forces acting on previously concentrated capsules of hydrogen to cause fusion to occur. Placing hydrogen with the right mix of hydrogen isotopes into meticulously prepared containers that are then forced together by magnetic fields of tremendous power that have to be coaxed into reacting using carefully directed super lasers, or as in the case of hydrogen bombs, but placing the hydrogen strategically with in an atomic bomb. The explosion then disperses the material in these bombs all over creation. Nothing resumes its former state or form. A star ignites only after an amount of hydrogen gathers into a cluster so large and so dense that the gravity created by the lightest element or compound in the universe, which does not bind or stick together with itself. These conglomerations of hydrogen must become so huge and dense that fusion can occur giving light to the planets that revolve around these star. These enormously large and dense balls of hydrogen must also be large enough to assure that the stars formed don't blow apart and disappear. All these steps toward star formation seem ridiculously unlike to me. Yet, billions of stars, make up all of the billions of galaxies we observe in the night sky. Star formation seems to start with relatively uniform dust clouds chaotically moving and dispersing in the vacuum of space having been blown apart in supernova explosions. Somehow almost pure, concentrated collections of hydrogen gas must be pulled out of the chaotic clouds and concentrated. The balls of hydrogen must start with small collections that will tend to fall apart but somehow end up as star-sized super-dense balls of hydrogen that spontaneously ignite due to the huge gravitational forces that develop as the star grows spontaneously to enormous size. The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics tells us that atomic interactions tend to move toward less organized states than into exceedingly organized compact states. We see exceptions to that when observing life-forms. Living cells contain complex bilayers of lipophosphates that contain enzymes or proteins that are capable of excluding sodium from the cell and concentrating potassium within the cell. This process creates high external concentrations of sodium and high internal concentrations of potassium. Energy is required to maintain these concentration gradients. 30% of the energy used by our bodies is consummed by this process. Complex metabolic processes made possible by proteins created by ribosomes coupled with RNA transcribed by RNA synthetase from DNA with the help of Transfer RNA driven by ATP generated by mitochondria that use bacteria and plan-derived oxygen and carbohydrates to make the proteins that act as nanomachines to create the ion gradients needed to maintain life. Life uses energy to create order unlike any other chemical systems we know of. We can detect life by looking for samples of stuff in which entropy is locally decreasing. When we see a child's room scattered with food, videos, toys, clothes, dust, mud, etc., we know that a source of chaos has been present (usually a child). If an hour later we see that the room is clean, the clothes are clean, folded and put away, that the trash has been picked up, placed in containers, and taken out to trash bins, we know that a living, organizing, entity with the intelligence and ability to create order out of chaos has made these changes (usually an older, more experience, more intelligent, stronger and better trained and knowledgeable Mother). Whatever forces are responsible for star formation from clouds of disorganized, dispersed, and mixed clouds of matter, they appear to be creating order out of chaos in the way that life forces generate order. Whatever is responsible for star formation, it is capable of creating enormous, purified concentrations of hydrogen that are capable of forming stars that in turn organize the movement of planets, some of which are capable of sustaining life. These entropy decreasing processes seem remarkably like tasks that only intelligent life forms are capable of but on a much, much larger scale. Is it possible that star formation requires the existence of something we might call God? If not, how do we account for the existence of stars?

Out of my control, I can't be bother to worry about it. I'll just be hopeful that science will find a way to minimize the destruction and give us warning enough to save as many lives as possible. I feel in world ending events, we could find a way to survive. When I say "we" I mean humans in some kind of form. Though life from then on would be apocalyptic. No more countries or world conflict. Technology would fall back 1 of 2 hundred years. That would be the least of the worries, but still I think we would survive...in some form...

Why don't people evacuate by foot ? a week is enough to get far from the blast by foot. Also bikes, and smaller transportation.

When I was like, 11 or 12 or so, I had been obsessed with the the world being destroyed by a asteroid impact. Now, I don’t care anymore, I learned that there isn’t anything you could do, but the chances are so, so very low. So don’t freak out. It will not hit, you won’t die! Now go eat some pizza rolls, and have a conversation with someone, your ok. :)

If you nuke a asteroid into small enough pieces, wouldn't it increase the surface area and cause it to burn up in the atmosphere more quickly?

This man is so full of s*** on so many issues. He thinks that because we know some of the near Earth objects that we can calculate for the ones that are outside of the system? He has no idea what he's talking about. There is no way to track asteroids outside of our system at all. There could be an incredibly large asteroid headed our way for an inevitable strike in a straight shot after being slung around planets and stars. It is not unfeasible for an asteroid to be traveling near the speed of light. And if it was coming straight at us we would never really know till it was too late. Funny part is the Bible predicts many asteroids falling in the future and some of these enable specific events to occur.

When that asteroid hit it rained for 40 days and 40 nights and blotted out the Sun for at least that long causing hyper cooling at the poles that continued cooling toward the equator. In other words it caused the ice age that occurred after the global flood that Noah lived through.

Dynamical chaos just means you can't calculate it. But you could if you saw more and had better computers. Unfortunately there are so many objects working in the universe that it is inevitable that asteroids will hit this planet. It is 100% inevitable.
