Is your notion of self-identity independent of social influences? Have you considered how much your identity has been negotiated with others since child-hood in order to be molded to the social norms? Clinical psychologist, Dr.Jordan B. Peterson uncovers the idea of functional identity and ties it to the tendencies you had as a child to self-regulate your behaviors in order to fit in. Your notion of self-identity and ability to leverage beyond the known in a logical landscape that navigates the unknown is anchored to the role you play among your peers. In this episode, you will travel through a conversation with Jordan and Tom that will push your view of peer groups, their role in shaping your identity, and how your responsibilities lie within your willingness to sacrifice and strive for more. Jordan explores the importance of slaying your dragons, and understanding that the ultimate battle is with yourself.

QUOTES:
“the ‘known’ is the place you are when what you’re doing produces the results you want” [8:45]

“You are all of those levels of identity, [...] all of those are a consequence of who you are but in interplay like in the situation with the child, all of that’s negotiated with other people” [11:43]

“It’s your duty, your developmental duty, as a child and as a teenager to take your isolated self and turn it into a functioning social unit.” [14:18]

“Your identity is the story you tell about your actions in the world, but it's also your actions in the world” [25:32]

“If something’s valuable you will make sacrifices to attain it [...] we could let go of something we value in the present, we would gain something we value even more in the future” [41:58]

“It’s harsh that the rewards of life are indiscriminately distributed, it's hard on everyone, but it doesn’t help to become bitter.” [54:14]

“Are you a rebel because you can’t fit in or are you a rebel because you could fit in but you see a better way?” [57:01]

“the best we have may not always work, but it’s still the best we have and the fact that it might not work doesn’t mean that we should throw it away, it’s still the best we have.” [1:19:00]

“You’re always looking for ‘no’ because you can only say ‘yes’ to a limited number of things.” [1:26:26]

My theory is when the world improves people forget there can be conflict in life and you could be wrong. E.g commerical world gives us what we want and treat us well. Relationships can go against this. People cant handle it and thats why they dont talk. Their beliefs/bubbles are shattered. I think we have to choose our words carefully when we discuss ideas but we should be open to listening. Unfortunately, no one is trained to accept constructive criticism and it's negative for most people and they dont want to hear it.

JP was instrumental in my “dark night of the soul” period I was stuck in for 2 years. I'm so grateful for his teachings and explaining exactly what my mind was doing and helping me dig myself out of my self pity and victim hood. I lost myself and therefore everything. When you think things can't get any worse - they really can!! I was there. Now I'm a different person and still climbing. Thank you Sir! 🙏 I am not a victim. Bad things happened which I reacted in full decades later all because I didn't have any boundaries or know how to be assertive or say no, you saved my life . I would not be here. You're a rare diamond in a world of chaos x

In regards to having a conscience and it not letting you go. My life actually got a lot better once I got rid of my conscience. To be constantly bothered by a guilty conscience is troublesome and will only slow you down or stop you from reaching your goals. When looking back when I was younger and I did have a conscience and acted accordingly to it, I can't see the benefit from it now. But that does not mean I'm a bad person. In fact, I value integrity, honesty, and dignity more than anything, values that often get in the way of becoming rich for example because that road is more often than not dirty as hell. But I don't let myself be bothered with conscience, guilt, shame etc. because it's all nonsense at the end of the day, which morally self-righteous people use to their own advantage to get ahead on the chessboard. But in this game of life, the only thing that matters is hierarchies, positions, opportunities, and self-interest. What you think, what you believe, how you feel - NONE of that matters! You want the best things in life, then change and adapt to the best places/peoples/situations.

What happens to a person, actually a massive group of people, that can't live or won't or find their way through the "new" world as presented by the leftists? I guess it's time to stand and fight for what you did know, where comfortable with, reflect the world around you, serves a positive function to society and is objectively observable in nature.

INCREDIBLE! What an amazing honest and compassionate man ! Breaks my heart that someone so accomplished and brilliant can not enjoy the fruits of his labour without criticism and judgement. Life is pain and suffering if you think it is but it’s only a test of those those things. They are not real. It is only the idea of those things, we need to go beyond to a place where only the spirit resides and we only have ourselves to judge.

The left attack Jordan because they believe that he is an existential threat to their Marxist hostile takeover and power agenda. Jordan speaks from the ideological basis of the enlightenment which is a fairly liberal philosophy. The left hate liberals just as much as they hate conservatives. Try going to a leftist town hall gathering and speaking your true mind as an individual outside of leftist identity group politics talking points and watch as you get shouted down as fast as you opened your mouth.

“I feel so unworthy.” -pause. “Unworthy of what?” -pause. [interjection] Life itself and the happiness thereof. The guilt of our iniquities weigh heavily on our subconscious identity as to impose on our conscious reality the inevitable consequence of said iniquities. IE: death. As Jordan is so apt to do, I will quote the Old Testament. Ecclesiastes 1:12-18. Specifically in Jordan’s case verses 17-18, which read “And I applied my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is but a striving after wind. For in much wisdom is much vexation, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.” I have been and will continue to pray for Jordan and those he reaches, for he is so close to the truth, yet blind to it. My dear friend Jordan, God is real and He is not a metaphoric entity created by our subconsciously help us navigate our perceived reality. He is why you fear. But, Proverbs 1:7: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” If I never have the opportunity to meet you Jordan, do not die in your sin, in your iniquity, and unbelief. The dragon (of your fears) is real, and He is God. Yet He does not want to devour you. He wants you to share in His treasures, to BE His treasured. For eternity. God bless you and soften your heart. Ciao

Thank you Dr.Peterson and tom for this discussion, for professor Peterson about why is he being targeted when he is honestly trying to help people to become truthful is not baffling to me at all after all jesus the ideal was crucified by the choice of people, that's always been the pattern, the good who speak to the soul in people to push them to be better will be mostly punished. And for Dr.Peterson i wish you'd be able to see yourself from the eyes of a lost young man as myself to know just how much your true worth of who you are in our eyes you deserve all peace and i am with tom that you're making the lives of so many better in unmeasurable way, thank you that you have been in a way the ideal in real life to aspire to be like and as truthful that you are.

Hello Tom, I've been following Jordan Peterson for some time, and share your admiration for this great man. I think I can help him. I could go into some detail - but, at the outset, I want you to just entertain the idea that maybe I can help. That's all you really need to consider. That's the hook. Towards the end of the interview, you made the point that you weren't family and therefore perhaps your are words could not reach him to the degree you would like them to. As I watched you two, the love and respect flowing between you was familial. You did reach him. I have developed a philosophical stance--just using logic--the value of which I think both you and he will recognize. My contacting him directly is unlikely. But, I figure I might be able to reach you. Once again, if you think that there's just the slightest chance that I might actually have some insight into how to alleviate that crushing burden of his feeling that he is undeserving - I think you'll reach for it. I hope you do. I want you to get in touch with me and allow me to impress you with my wisdom. I figure the sequence will go, emails for a while, and then a phone conversation. I'm not looking for an interview; I'm looking for a connection with someone who can help me benefit others with what I have developed. Hoping to hear from you soon. John Huckel

This podcast is exactly what I needed ! God bless you Jordan ! I learn way more things about psychology by watching jordan's podcasts and lectures than by going to college ! I know that Jordan is going to get upset if he reads this comment because it's another proof that the universities aren't doing their job... but unfortunately it's the truth. I'm in grad-school, studying psychology, right now and Jordan has been (and still is) my best teacher. Y'all guys don't need to go to college to learn Human Sciences, you just need to listen to Jordan everyday. You won't learn anything more in University ! Whatever... Be well Jordan, we love you ! Take care of yourself ! You're like a light in the middle of the darkness ! Much love from France !

I like Jordan Peterson so much but the whole evolution/darwin stuff is truly unbelievable even if one doesn't take the Word literally. The Word has proved true in history, geography, advice and fulfilled prophecy and coming to fruition rapidly. The fact that Israel exists at all whether hated or loved-exists proves that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is the only God. No self fulfilling prophecy. Man is too fickle for that. And the more New Testament manuscripts are found the textual purity of the Bible proves true. And the variants are irrelevant. What has he found true about evolution? Fred Hoyle and Colin Patterson couldn't. Adaptation yes. Before the flood people lived 100s of years. They were far superior and better equipped than we are. After the flood humans had to start over. And fend with Entropy. The devil is currently the prince of this earth and the air. He's on a long leash. He would certainly corrupt 'science'. 3 For the time will come when men will not tolerate sound doctrine, but with itching ears they will gather around themselves teachers to suit their own desires. 4 So they will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.…2 Timothy 4:4 This Christ Jordan Peterson described sounds like the U.N.s Cosmic Christ which is the spirit of the Antichrist. Order out of Chaos is Masonic. We are not progressing. We're not more intelligent than the Germans in the 30s. We are less.

Identity is what creates all your misery. Observe it. You adopted it all from second hand sources. It is all second hand. Your accumulated 'mind' is second hand. It is a cultural construct that you have come to believe is you. This whole mask and facade can be dropped. Go beyond psychology. Find your original face. Consider original innocence.

TO JP: I loved being a clinician BUT the system is a mess. U just paid the price that u say ppl must be willing to pay. So what’s the beef guy? Pain is part of life and u are no longer on the upper hierarchy u so love to harp about so now I know why u aren’t QUITE as shitty in your interviews. LOTS of us question meaning and life and death and we come to our own truth and we r free to do that but u r still coming from a conservative perspective and u will never be one of us. Human yes but not the hugely intuitive ppl that see so much mediocrity in the world and then u scream about natural hierarchy ITS NOT NATURAL anymore can’t u see that? The culture war is simply a CHANGE in the hierarchy what was valued long ago with the ridiculous rt is not being valued by the culture at large not Bec its so uneven but Bec it’s so RIGGED! What is success? U really never question BEST OR SUCCESS! the left does and I don’t mean that far left crap I am a believer in balance but your version of balance is creating more RESENTMENT AND MEDIOCRITY! everyone can’t be best But does that make number 2-3-infinity LESS and they r supposed to feel good about that. I once heard u say if u had to have brain surgery, u WOUDL want the best wouldnt u. Honestly think most would BUT guess what we can’t all have the best! r u really gonna sit there and say that being the number 10 neurosurgeon is BAD? U really are coming across as one sided on this competence issue. What is competence? Do u ever question that? Competence isn’t about crushing your opponent. There IS a social aspect to it and too many ppl now the the Peter principle COME ALIVE and it ain’t Bec of the left! . It’s always been there always! But now that is it slowly changing u think it’s about INCOMPETENCE! U just ASSUME that a arbitrary ranking of #1 surgeon is what soemoen WOUDL want but those who have moved past this simple acceptance of ‘rank’ based on WHAT? How many they didn’t kill? Outcomes r always subjective. It’s ppls reports maybe they walk better afterward and that is their quality of life they wanted most. They likely will report a better outcome. U rt wingers r always caught up with calling the left communists and everyone being the same AND THATS NOT WHAT IT IS! we have been so disrespected in the most basic of levels and u think it’s about this identity of race gender. Guess what! ITS THE WAY TO WIN Bec ur version is the status quo and won’t SERVE this species in the future Bec it will KILL US ALL OFF! Hierarchy isn’t the enemy and it never was. It’s the arrogance to beleive that might makes right even to the point of EXTINCTION of our species w your way and we r sick of seeing this justification by u ppl in order to keep the status quo

Strong conservs esp do like to live by rules yet they thwart every movement forward w huge resentment but they r usu passive aggressive and SLOW DOWN EFFICIENCYz it’s a rule change and they don’t want it and they r constantly r afraid about losing job. Peterson is controversial because he courageously faces the aggression and reputation destruction inherent in our age of social media and refuses to accept lies. In doing so, he forces anyone that will listen to reflect upon themselves and their behaviour in ways that are uncomfortable. For many, to accept what Peterson says requires that they acknowledge their own failures. So they choose not to listen and continue the denigration. All reasonable thinking people would accept what Peterson has to say as, at the least, thoughtful and exciting. Unfortunately, he exists in a world and on platforms rife with narcissism, derangement and immaturity. People don't want to hear what Peterson has to say because they know deep down that he is right about many things they don't want to accept. People don't want responsibility. Far easier to group up and attack the source than to shoulder the burden on your own. Young women are responsible for this far more than any men. It is not a coincidence that Peterson is met with such vitriol in an online world dominated by female aggression and reputation destruction from an iGen of pathological women with profound mental health problems and victimhood. Peterson is the antithesis of the social justice warrior, and he is taking on millions at a time on his own. It's no wonder he is exhausted.

Tom I can’t help but notice all this is coming from a middle aged white male, the main driver of culture. U two don’t address a few things, like 1- in accepting the ‘tyranny’ of culture u r acquiescing to it 2- society changes and it takes gutsy ppl that don’t acquiesce in order to help drive change 3- u harp about rights but SOCIETY years ago felt as a gay person you didn’t have any rights, u were ‘CANCELED’ by conserves. What about basic RESPECT? what u didn’t mention is that the existing structure DID, in fact treat u as a RACE or a GENDER. when u have such a lack of anything other than the prevailing attitudes and desires of European white male conquerors along with rugged individualism who really seem bent on only valuing a dyed piece of paper with printing on it, this whole argument is rationalized via your white male eyes. Yes life is unfair, yes we r generally all shit on during our lives BUT these types of arguments for essentially the status quo always seem to originate from the same old people. This is coming Across like tough titty, we r in power and that’s it. I find this arrogant. When it comes to social cues and a number of other factors, not everyone is the same. And when I said RESPECT, Christ everyone deserves basic respect. Tell your deal here to the myriad of black and gay people who were killed Bec of their color or sex orientation ALONE. Tell women we aren’t good enuf to work a mans job Bec I do and I am a straight white female. We don’t want equal outcomes we want EQUAL ACCESS AND EQUAL RESPECT and I can tell u it don’t happen. it’s tiring to have ppl like you find every way in the book to construct an idea to keep u in power. Easy for you to say ‘you have every right to feel defensive BUT DONT!’ we r the ones that have to live it and I bet if u magically woke up as a black male u might find it hard to deal with. cant u see that having no role models that look like us, no exposure to the realm that a lot of others get, to grown up with aociety telling u in so many ways u r not valued. Well shit guy resentment will likely be part of it and u telling us to use your mind doesn’t change the resentment we feel. I know CBT and I know all about behavioral patterns and ‘doing it anyway’ but to never have power to chart your own course and to STILL be so sexual ones by men makes me ill. The tough titty attitude AS WELL as the extreme leftie stances r those ying and yang that never gets balanced. Any number feel they will take the heat they will upset the apple cart in order to effectuate change. I will say Jordan doesnt act quite as arrogant and shitty as he used to. Maybe he found out his shit does stink Bec of his addiction and the ridiculous notion that he could, alone, detox. U can die and yet here u go. Pride and ego rear their head. And as for you Tom. You clearly stated you don’t care about yourself, u care about others. I call BULLSHIT. Those behaviors u do including helping others FEED YOUR EGO needs. You wouldn’t and couldn’t behave consistently if it didn’t. No one can. U do have needs and wants. NO ONE is immune and no is totally altruistic. HUMANS NEED and u r human ARENT you? and lastly u seriously contradicted yourself when u said your priorities. I mean do u really expect us to believe when u say you work all the time or work out that your wife and family still come first?! no way. You have some self learning to do. U get off on this stuff. Nothing wrong with that but be honest! There is so much psychologically that u r missing and to tell a black or white man, who MAY have socialization of the hood that he has every right to be resentful BUT behave my way to help yourself. What a crock of shit! Behavioral patterns r really embossed on you. Why not redo his life already? Go to the hood back 25 years and live in their world and u then come outta that and say OH, I can change my behavior! And oh I can do it by myself as tho a person wouldn’t need enormous help in establishing much change at all. it just slays me every time old Jordan starts up he has sycophants that try to emulate him. U have swallowed this stuff wo question. And before anyone says otherwise. Jordan has some very good pts to make BUT every time he ends up coming across as TOUGH TITTY deal with it and take ALWAYS forbidden to ask for BASIC RESPECT FOR BEING DIFFERENT. that is why identity politics got started. yes Some of it is overboard. BUT we would never have seen any of the diversity that we do see without it. Remember society and culture is strong but it doesn’t give it the right to excuse injustice and huge level of inequality simply based on color of skin or gender. And identity politics gained momentum BEC U PPL WHO REPRESENT OUR ENTIRE SOCIETY REFUSED TO GIVE US A CHANCE OR EVEN BASIC RESPECT. Cant u see it’s the only way it brings the convo to this level. u just don’t get it and I am not a supporter of it in the extreme but u will play hell keeping them all down NOW as u guys did even 50 yrs ago. besides u can talk all u want about it BUT every empire falls and progress is made. asking ppl to squelch SOMETHING so integral and so valued by them only to be told tough shut up is NOT the answer.

@A. A. Far from linear, neither leaning to the left or the right. Clearly more free thinking than you are. Not but 3 sentences in and you are already segregating the two of them by their group identities, which is the whole reason why the progress of society as a whole is being challenged. Stop crying equality and gender parity when the first words from your mouth are white male. If you continue to push your agenda in that matter you worsen the divide between our colours and creeds. Have you ever watched Any of his videos, I gather not, because he treats people as individuals more than any radical feminist, racial activist, gender identity rights activist, human hating emotionally charged and un rational Nimrod than you will ever have the opportunity to listen to. And I don't mean finding a few words throughout that you don't agree with or can use to twist your agenda, I mean actually hearing what he's saying, and understanding it. You want a good informative interview, watch his interview on The Femsplainers with Christina Hoff Summers. They are not the Cathy Newman and Helen Lewis type feminists of the world, they listen and offer a proper platform to debate in which they know with the research he's done on specific topics that his word is not forceful and fueled by emotion, but consciousness and intelligence. I find it funny you challenge someone by resorting to names, uneducated comments and emotionally charged nonsense. Good on you though if it helps you sleep at night and you think the world will be better off in such a manner.
